Carron Ironworks Collection

This was a VACMA funded project to research some of the enamel samples and signs produced by the Carron Ironworks during the 19th Century currently archived in the Falkirk Collection. I made 5 enamel works inspired by studying these pieces. They were brought from the storage unit to the reading room at Callendar House where I was able to handle and look at the actual objects. The 3 dimensionality of them was one of the first things that struck me. They are enamelled on cast iron with very thick enamel. I began experimenting with sheet metal folding to build more sculptural objects out of the sheet steel before enamelling it.
